In what I’ll call the ‘let them eat cake’ moment for higher education, a vice-chancellor was quoted as saying: Technological innovations promising low-cost higher education “have all failed in the past and MOOCs will go the same way”.
What a callous statement to make when the weight of student debt is crushing the backs of so many! I believe those words will eventually be eaten with a side order of crow. Yes, the statement originated from the UK, but the sentiment is shared by higher ed bigwigs in the States, as well.
MOOCs are like the first wave on the beaches of Normandy. They are harbingers of an invading force that will eventually liberate the masses from a crippling delusion, that an excellent education requires debt.
